Chapter 35

Lutara and I chilled in her bed after the spirited shenanigans in the wellspring. As requested, I’d be spending the night with her. We started off lying side by side. But then, little by little, she got closer and decided to try cuddling for a change.

The moment she put her naked Arakon body against mine, I turned toward her and put my arm around her. She relaxed right into it, taking a deep breath and we waited for sleep.

Clearly, the two of us were still very much awake.

“You okay?” I asked, breaking the silence.

A pregnant pause.

“My claws. If I put my arm over you, it could hurt,” she said.

“Nah, you’re fine,” I said, taking her by the wrist and pulling her arm over my chest. “See? No problem.”

Lutara remained there, then pressed her cheek against my shoulder. “This is…pleasant.”

“Yeah.”

“How do you do this with Rineska? Her parts take up more room than mine.”

I chuckled. “Okay so, in order to spoon her she has to wrap her back legs around me like a harness. It’s perfectly safe, but they lock when she’s asleep. So if I have to take a piss in the middle of the night it’s tricky.”

“And you truly love her—even though she’s Arakon?”

“More than I have the words to explain. And it doesn’t matter that she’s Arakon, she’s beautiful. You’re beautiful.”

“I wasn’t talking about myself.”

“Yes you were,” I said. “I might be younger than you but I’m not stupid either. I have enough wives that I’ve learned a thing or two about how women think.”

Lutara looked up at me with a furrowed brow. “We are not all the same.”

“Uh-huh. If you’re trying to be all mysterious and unknowable, it’s not going to work.”

“I am not trying to be anything, I am Arakon.”

Since I wasn’t trying to argue, I just sighed.

“Lutara, what’s your point? I thought we were trying to sleep.”

“I am not tired yet, so I chose to make conversation.”

“Okay, you still haven’t—ugh. Lutara…this is all new stuff for you. I get it. The sex, the company, it’s not your style. You’re an Arakon queen, and your life is the swarm,” I took Lutara’s hand and held it gently, caressing the tops of her claws. “But if you want more than that, you can have it. I’ll give it to you.”

Lutara’s expression softened, her breathing picked up, and then she kissed me.

For the first time, I wasn’t the one to initiate it.

Even though it wasn’t the first time our lips touched, it felt like our first kiss.

Our first real kiss.

She closed her eyes as it ended with a gentle smacking sound, then put her head back on my chest.

A large shadow suddenly fell upon the room—something big was outside the window, right next to the ship. I looked over and saw a Dire Fly: a giant, nasty creature with six legs and a long proboscis capable of firing destructive blasts and ripping apart the hull of an unshielded ship.

More of the swarm started to swoop around, keeping a loose orbit around the Praetor to the point of some security shuttles coming to investigate.
